Why You Should Focus On Your Mindset When Negotiating Your Job And Salary

Featured in Community

I help women negotiate their careers and salaries. And I do this by coaching them mostly on their mindset.

This often confuses people.

Isn’t getting really good negotiation outcomes down to knowing insider tricks and specific negotiation techniques?

Sure the latter helps.

But as I often say: my clients’ ridiculous success rates (49.1% average salary increase on last count!) are down for 80% to the inner work they do, and only 20% to the negotiation strategies we teach.

Anybody who thinks that they can get awesome results by reading negotiation books, is in for an unpleasant surprise. Not just because these tend to be written by white men for other white men (and as such do not work for us).

Here’s why knowledge only is not going to cut it during salary negotiations: you WILL get pushback when you ask for more.

(And if you don’t…. my god, we have a whole new problem… Because then you haven’t asked enough and you’re leaving a lot of money on the table. But I’ll address the specific “Winner’s Curse” some other time.)

And when you get pushback and you haven’t built an unshakeable self-confidence, you will crumble like a cheap, plastic folding chair would under the weight of an elephant: you will lower your standards, you will give in or you will give up.

But when you’re crystal clear on what your value is, and you know how to communicate this effectively, you’ll end up building the relationship AND getting exactly what you want.
