Office Politics FTW
The biggest complaint I get from women kicking ass in corporate, is how that ass-kicking doesn’t seem to be enough. How they must also engage in office politics to move up on the career ladder.
How office politics are stupid.
And icky.
And difficult.

Girl, same… I wholeheartedly agree with you, at least on the first two points.
I agree that office politics are stupid in the sense that what should matter in promotion decisions is the value of the work you deliver and your potential to do even more good in a higher role.
Anything else is indeed stupid.
I also feel a similar sense of yuck at the traditional notion of office politics as back-stabbing, gossip-y, sucking-up-to-the-right-people-type-of-BS.

But office politics difficult?
Nah.
Understand the basics of human psychology. Add a sprinkling of knowing how relationship and group dynamics work. Throw in a solid communication framework to integrate the above and you’re good to go. Honestly, it’s far from rocket science. And it’s definitely not some kind of innate ability that either you have or you lack.

Listen, you don’t have to love office politics. But you DO have to understand the basic concepts and work with them, to ensure you’re making office politics work for you, in a way that feels and IS good and in integrity.
