It’s all mindset
What separates you from your current position and a promotion plus fabulous, fabulous salary and set-up, is 80% mindset and 20% strategy.
I ALWAYS get pushback when I say this. But it’s true.
That’s why my WINners get on average 49% salary increases plus unicorn-level roles, whilst most career or negotiation coaches stay stuck at much lower numbers and successes. They focus on techniques, on tips and tricks that fail to address the real hurdle on the way to career success: the BS stories we tell ourselves.
Think about it: if you don’t know your worth, you cannot communicate it, let alone get it.
If – deep inside – you think you are asking for too much for wanting both a prestigious job AND a life outside of it, you simply ask for that promotion. If you believe in your heart of hearts that sharing your success amounts to bragging, do you think you’ll do it?
Of course not.
Or, what is worse: you will dip your toe in the water. You have read that “Ten Tips To Ask For A Raise!” piece in a magazine, and try a few of those. Or you remember the piece of advice your career coach gave you and you will try and implement it. But it doesn’t work (or worse: backfires). Speaking from experience, let me tell you what happens in that case: you get put off having these conversations altogether. You now have the belief that you are not good at this or that it doesn’t work, making the hurdle to have a go next time, even higher.
So before we get into the communication skills to negotiate that promotion and salary, address the mental barriers you have first.
Look inside and see what’s really holding you back from stepping up. Once that is addressed and cleared, I promise you, the results will follow.
