How To Make Sure You Get Promoted

Here’s How I Helped My Client Get Promoted With A Significant Raise Within Four Days Of Joining My Program

So let me set the scene for you. Let’s call her Anna, a hardworking, super-dedicated, ass-kicking Head of Finance in a multinational, who’s been slogging in that position for years, without much love from the company in return.

A woman of colour, and the first to go to university and then join a corporate in her family, this lady knew a thing about being underestimated, undervalued and overcoming obstacles. Her work was consistently excellent, as evidenced by appraisals with the highest ratings from both her team members and her leadership team.

But the next hurdle, the jump to VP, seemed insurmountable, with vague promises that never quite worked out. And which, she admitted sheepishly, she didn’t push for very hard either.

When she joined the WIN Way program, she was exhausted, frustrated and angry. And anxious, as her annual appraisal was coming up and she didn’t want to settle yet again.

In the few days we had to prep her, we focused on her mindset, and overcoming the limiting beliefs that had held her back in the past.

We also devised a rock-solid strategy to motivate her leadership to promote her.

This plan didn’t focus on (lack of) fairness or negativity. It simply outlined how her operating at VP level would benefit the team, the company and the person on the other side of the table.

The morning of the first meeting, she messaged me “I’m excited! I’m looking forward to this talk!”, which showed me she would do very well.

And she did.

Of course she did.

She got the promotion and then negotiated a 42% raise.

Now the groundwork for this level of success was obviously laid by Anna herself in the years and months prior to these talks. She did great work and got great results for her team and manager.

But without a solid plan of action AND the right mindset entering these conversations, she would have likely walked away from the negotiation table with the similar useless promises as the ones she had been made in the past.

It’s like that saying: If you do what you’ve always done, you are going to get what you always got.

If you don’t like what you are getting, you need to change the way you do things. So consider this my – gentle but firm – kick up the bum. If you’re not happy with the outcome of your annual appraisal or your negotiation, change the way you are going about it. If you want me holding your hand and whispering in your ear every step of the way, let me know, so I can help you, too.
